Quick Heal Enhances Product Portfolio

Client-security vendor Quick Heal Technologies has refreshed its entire product range including AntiVirus 2010, Internet Security 2010 and Total Security 2010 to incorporate several new features.

"Quick Heal 2010 series is much lighter, faster and smarter than its previous versions. Lighter in terms of lesser memory usage during operation, and an enhanced engine that performs faster scanning and quicker updates. Advanced technologies implemented in the enhanced scan engine help in deeper scanning of threats, which was not possible in earlier versions, making it smarter and ready to fight latest threats," said Kailash Katkar, CEO, Quick Heal Technologies.

Quick Heal 2010 series is compatible with Windows 7 and has several new features like advanced memory scanning, USB drive protection, browsing protection and entertainment mode. The advance memory scanning feature scans the system memory at the Kernel level detecting even Rootkit drivers. The USB drive protection feature is aimed at stopping malwares from getting executed when an infected pen drive is plugged into the PC.

"One of the key features we have included in our latest suite is entertainment mode for gaming enthusiasts. In this mode, Quick Heal goes into silent mode and displays no prompts and reduces system load. It makes activities like playing games, watching movies or presentation an uninterrupted event," said Katkar.

Quick Heal has also added PC Tuner functionalities in the Total Security suite, which performs registry cleaning, disk cleaning, registry optimization and performance tuning. Besides, Total Security features additional support for new mobile phone models in the PC2Moblie scan, including support for scanning of Apple iPhone.

Quick Heal 2010 range also claims to have a better browsing protection feature to prevent browser from visiting infected websites, and enhanced Firewall function.

Fujitsu, Netapp Strengthen Global Partnership

Fujitsu and NetApp announced their plans to deepen their partnership globally and provide more tightly integrated and automated storage and data management solutions. The companies intend to jointly develop integrated products and services—specifically in the areas of virtualization, storage and data management, and storage services and solutions.

"We introduced our Dynamic Infrastructures portfolio a year ago as the cornerstone of Fujitsu's global IT portfolio," said Kai Flore, President and CEO, Fujitsu Technology Solutions. "NetApp's strengths in unified storage align perfectly with our high-quality, high-performance and highly reliable Eternus SAN and storage software, creating a joint comprehensive storage portfolio to meet customer's every need."

The companies are currently working to integrate NetApp's storage management software into Fujitsu's resource management framework. The framework dynamically orchestrates servers, networks, storage and software into logical system platforms to run applications on demand. It also enables easier administration of data center environments, allows single console management of the entire infrastructure, and increases productivity and operational efficiency through ease of use.

The integrated offerings from the leading IT vendors will help customers reduce their capital expenditures, leverage their current operational experience. The companies also announced their intention to implement a global, joint go-to-market strategy involving complementary products.

The full integration of NetApp V-series with Fujitsu Eternus will enable customers to preserve their current investments with virtually no disruption to their operations.

The companies also intend to develop and offer a joint portfolio of advanced services including consulting, professional services, managed storage services and maintenance services.

IBM Collaborates With TN Colleges, Opens 6 CoEs

IBM announced extended collaboration with six engineering and technology
colleges in Tamil Nadu and opened up Centers of Excellence (CoE), creating a
unique opportunity for students to learn new skill sets on IBM software
products-like DB2, WebSphere, Lotus, Rational and Tivoli-and develop
world-class business solutions.

The CoEs were launched at Sona College of Technology, Salem; KLN College of
Information Technology, Madurai; Kalasilingam University, Krishnankovil; RMK
College of Engineering, Chennai; Karpagam College of Engineering, Coimbatore
and Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore.

The colleges will provide infrastructure and high end systems, while IBM
will extend its entire range of software suite free of charge. The software
vendor will follow a two-pronged approach. It will provide the colleges with
access to technologies relevant to the market and ensure that the right
skills are taught.

"Organizations are not looking for nuts-and-bolts programmers and
easy-to-document support workers," said Himanshu Goyal, Country Manager,
Academic Initiative, Developer Works and Globalization, IBM India and South
Asia. "Increased competitiveness and demand for the corresponding business
and technology skills will require students to develop a unique skill-set
never seen before but the supply of such people with the right skills for a
smart planet is increasingly inadequate. CoEs are an extension of IBM's
commitment to nurture skills for the 21st century."

Acer To Expand Gateway Channels

Acer India is planning the second phase of expansion for its Gateway brand.
Spanning over the next six months, the expansion plans include setting up
several shop-in-shops across multiple large format and multi-brand retails
stores. The vendor is also planning to refresh and introduce new product
lines to further augment the brand positioning.

"The initial roll out phase through 16 Croma stores has received a good
response, especially during the first three months of creating Gateway brand
presence in the country. We touched the critical 1,000 unit-per-month mark,"
informed S Rajendran, CMO, Acer India.

In the next phase, commenced in November 2009, Acer has expanded Gateway's
presence to other LFRs including Staples, Reliance Digital and eZone. The
vendor also plans to have shop-in-shop stores in 20 multi-brand
partner-driven retail outlets in top 10 cities.

"We decided against going in for branded specialty stores, since the market
where Gateway is currently being pitched is still small. The range is
specifically targeted at a customer who does not mind paying a premium for
Gateway's extra styling and design. The brand is positioned against top
consumer brands like Pavilion (HP) and Vaio (Sony)," Rajendran informed.

Acer is betting on tripling the monthly numbers during the same period to
around 3,000.

Currently, its new all-in-one desktops are being positioned in desktop
category and a wide range of notebooks and netbooks are being pitched in the
mobile computing category. As a precursor, Acer recently launched 11.6 inch
Gateway LT 3111-based on an AMD L110 platform.

"We will be launching more products as we ramp up numbers in this phase,"
said Rajendran.

Rajendran also clarified that Gateway will be a retail brand, sold either
through LFRs or proper retail outlets. "At this point of time, we don't plan
to engage with non-retail consumer channels."
