Emerson Network Power Forays Into Entreprise Inverter Segment

Emerson Network Power has announced its foray into the enterprise inverter segment with the launch of breakthrough technology 'In Pulse' with output rating of 30 kVa.

In Pulse inverters are high capacity industrial back-up solutions that offer an alternative to cumbersome and noisy diesel generators sets that industries use for high-capacity power back-up. In Pulse offers various benefits over traditional generators such as low operational cost, no manual intervention required, no noise or air pollution, low total cost of ownership and payback period, unbalanced load distribution is possible and many more. Various verticals and applications where In pulse can be used include real estate (lift, water motor, staircase lighting), retail (air conditioners, telecom (shelters), battery and electrical contracts.

The go-to-market strategy for In-Pulse is 100 percent channel-centric. This product category has lucrative service revenue opportunities for partners. This extensive network will also provide sales and service support to its clients

Commenting on the launch, Jitendra Sonar, Sr. Product Manager Monitoring and Inverter, ENP said, "Enterprise inverter market stands at around Rs 2000 crore and is growing significantly. Currently, the sector is dominated by players that provide solutions with limited capacity. With introduction of In Pulse, we aim to bridge this gap and offer customers world class advance solutions that can positively impact the bottom-line of the clients."

LG Targets SMB Customers

LG is now eying the Indian SMB market with a complete range of products. The Korean electronics giant has a firm strategy to capture 10 percent of the $400 million market in India within the next one year. The range of products in the SMB portfolio include network monitors, projectors, laptops, digital signage, surveillance security, water purifiers, air conditioners, refrigerators and microwave.

"In terms of the number of SMBs, India is the second largest country in the world totaling to 35 million. Since more than 70 percent of the Indian SMBs prefer one stop shop buying for all their office equipment, this sector provides immense opportunity and potential for growth," Moon B Shin, Managing Director, LG Electronics India. The LG SMB Solution is an attempt to provide full range of electronics, appliances & computing solutions to SMB owners at 'one-stop'.

Shin added, "We would support our reseller partners by organizing promotional activities to raise awareness on LG SMB Solutions among both target users (SMBs) and potential users (general customers). We intend to build SMB experience zones for customers to visit and explore the right products."

The wants to increase its focus on IT and it feels that the commercial segment would be the key to its growth in the next year. The company has now added a slew of products to its enterprise portfolio, launched this year, to lure the SMB.

The company also plans to spend Rs 200 crore in R&D and other activities over the next three years for its Business Solutions division, which includes about Rs 28 crore ($6 million) investment plan for marketing activities in 2010. By April 2010, LG also plans to launch an SMB finance program with 0 percent finance and deferring payments up to three months and lease program.

Microsoft Sued By Bing! (And We Don't Mean Its Search Engine)

Just as Microsoft worked out a compromise to its long-running conflict with the European Union, it now faces the prospect of legal action from a pair of small companies the software giant has allegedly wronged.

Last week Microsoft admitted that a Chinese contract developer, hired by MSN China to develop its Juku microblogging site, copied code from Plurk, a competing site. Although Microsoft has apologized for the fiasco, Plurk has hinted that it might take legal action.

Now comes word that a small design firm in St Louis has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft, claiming it owns trademark rights to the "Bing!" name Microsoft chose earlier this year for its overhauled search engine.

Last week Bing! Information Designs LLC filed the lawsuit against Microsoft in the 22nd Judicial Circuit of the Missouri Circuit Court in St. Louis charging Microsoft with trademark infringement and unfair competition.

Bing! (the St Louis one) maintains that it has been using the name since 2000. A story in The Seattle Times on Friday quoted the company's attorney, Tony Simon, as saying that since Microsoft rebranded its search engine with the Bing! name earlier this year, clients of the St Louis Bing! are confused and think the design firm is somehow affiliated with Microsoft.

The company is seeking "actual and punitive damages," including having Microsoft pay for advertising to reverse the confusion the software vendor has created, according to a Dow Jones Newswire story. The suit does not specify a dollar amount for the alleged damages.

Microsoft spokespersons have said they don't believe the suit has any merit.

One point in Microsoft's defense: While the St Louis Bing! claims that it has been using the name for almost 10 years, the company just filed a trademark application for the name in May—after word began circulating that Microsoft might adopt the name, according to a story published online today by the Guardian newspaper in Britain. Microsoft filed a similar application in March for the Bing! trademark, the story said.

As for the Plurk case, the Canadian company has yet to take legal action, but a posting on the company's blog last week indicated that a lawsuit is likely.

"We are currently looking at all possibilities on how to move forward in response to Microsoft's recent apology statement," said Alvin Woon, Co-founder, Plurk in the blog. "We are still thinking of pursuing the full extent of our legal options available, due [to] the seriousness of the situation. Basically, Microsoft accepts responsibility, but they do not offer accountability."

Police were busy, so didn't act: DGP

Punjab Director General of Police NS Gill said that the Ludhiana police failed to act on the complaint of the migrant labourers as they were busy making arrangements for an upcoming public function.

The police inaction is believed to have provoked the labourers in Dhandari Kalan in Ludhiana to a violent protest since Thursday evening following which curfew had to be clamped in five police stations.

Gill claimed the situation was quiet now. He said while there were no reports of how many civilians sustained injuries, 15 police personnel had been injured. The DGP put the number of damaged vehicles at 23 which included nine that had been torched.

The DGP said that according to its information one Sube Lal, a labourer had approached the police last night to lodge a complaint of looting. Provoked by the police inaction, the labourers gheraoed the police station before moving on to block traffic and damaging the vehicles.

The authorities clamped curfew in five police stations on Friday when the violence intensified.

IBM Wins National Award For Empowering People With Disabilities

IBM has received two prestigious awards—National Award by the Government of India and Helen Keller Award for year 2009, given by the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP)—for its commitment to creating an inclusive environment at workplace, especially for people with disabilities.

The National Award, given by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, was conferred upon IBM for its technology innovation, Spoken Web, recognizing its immense potential for improving the life of people with disability. The Shell-NCPEDP Helen Keller award was given to IBM for demonstrating policies and practices that promote equal employment opportunity for people with disabilities.

IBM received the Government of India's National Award in categories of Best Employer and Accessibility Innovation in 2008 and 2007 respectively. This year, three IBM employees—Hari Raghavan, Murali C Sharma, and Madhu Bala Sharma—also received this prestigious award in individual categories. Raghavan and Sharma earned the award in the Best Employee category, while Madhu Bala Sharma earned the honor in the Role Model category.

"IBM recruited its first employee with disability almost a century ago and has a long history of creating an inclusive work environment. We take pride in promoting accessibility through innovative products and unique services that can drive growth for the company, individuals, and the larger society. We are honored to receive these recognitions for the third consecutive year," said Shanker Annaswamy, Managing Director, IBM India.

The Spoken Web technology helps people, who have little or no literacy or are visually impaired; get the benefits of the World Wide Web by creating a parallel system similar to the Internet. This voice enabled technology enables physically challenged people to have access and share information, do business transactions, or create social networks by creating VoiceSites through their mobile or landline phones.

Indian Server Market Declines 28 Percent In Q3

Overall, Indian server market totaled at around $118 million during Q3 2009 registering a year-on-year decline of 28.3 percent, according to the latest Gartner report. The report attributes the market decline partly to the sluggish economic situation coupled with seasonality observed around Q3.

Gartner expects that the OND quarter should be much better primarily fuelled by a lot of pent up demand coupled with year end buying. Overall, HP emerged as the market leader followed by IBM and Sun Microsystems.

According to the report, "x86 servers accounted for around 59 percent of the market revenue leading to a revenue increase of 4.4 percent, as compared to last quarter. This further suggests that India CIO's have started selective purchase of servers, which can be considered as an early signal of economic recovery. India companies have undertaken a lot server refresh and consolidation projects. Virtualization has been a key driver for such deployments in large as well as mid-market territory."

Non x86 server shipments to India witnessed a sequential decline of 35.9 percent during the quarter.  Some of the large projects seem to be deferred for the next quarter.

Enhancing Health Insurance cover to weavers

RAJYA SABHA

The Government of India has been implementing the Health Insurance Scheme for the XI Plan from 2007-08 for providing health care facilities to the handloom weavers.

Under the Health Insurance Scheme, the weaver's family of four is entitled for all medical benefits worth Rs. 15,000/- on payment of his/her share of premium. The weavers can easily avail of cashless facility from the nearest OPD centres and IPD hospitals empanelled with the implementing agency i.e. ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd. In the case of reimbursement, the insurance company i.e. ICICI Lombard shall reimburse expenses incurred by the weavers within the stipulated time and on submission of prescription and the vouchers for the medicines to the local coordinators. The process is simple and easily accessible in the clusters. Delay in the re-imbursement is mostly due to incomplete documents only. This information was given by the Minister of State for Textiles, Smt. Panabaaka Lakshmi in the Rajya Sabha today, in a written reply to a question by Smt. Mohsina Kidwai.

The Minister further stated that at present there is no proposal for enhancing the insurance cover under the Health Insurance Scheme.

The enhancement in the insurance cover will involve a higher rate of total premium which will also result in increase in the weaver's share of premium causing additional burden on the weavers and many weavers may not be able to pay the increased premium. The present Health Insurance Scheme covers all pre-existing as well as new diseases and a substantial provision has been kept for OPD. The annual limit per family is Rs. 15,000/- out of which OPD cover is Rs. 7,500/-, the Minister added.

Venyon is well positioned to provide aggregating TSM services between mobile network operators issuing NFC-capable SIM cards and service providers such as transit companies and banks on the growing NFC market.

"This move to acquire full ownership of Venyon is another key milestone in G&D's strategy. It will enable us to continue to expand our position as a provider of secure mobile phone solutions - from SIM and secure microSD cards through software to the secure administration of critical applications on the mobile phone," emphasized Karsten Ottenberg, CEO of Giesecke & Devrient. "The market for NFC solutions is expected to develop steadily. Venyon has built up leading service expertise in the NFC ecosystem, which will also be useful to us in other business sectors."

"Nokia is proud to be a supporter and provide multiple enabling roles for NFC, one of them having been our investment in Venyon," said Mark Selby, VP, Industry Collaborations, Nokia. "As the market for NFC is now maturing, the time is right for us to focus our efforts even more on NFC-enabled mobile devices and solutions designed to support NFC. We believe Venyon's crucial role as a trusted third party working with mobile operators and service providers is best supported through full ownership by Giesecke & Devrient, who are recognized experts in secure applications in this market."

G&D estimates that the demand for NFC services is increasing worldwide. With its industry-leading expertise combined with G&D's position in the SIM and secure applications market, Venyon is well positioned to provide TSM services to banks, transit operators, mobile network operators and other stakeholders planning to commercialize their NFC services.

Nokia releases Qt 4.6

Now easier than ever for developers to create great applications for Symbian, Maemo, and other platforms

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today released Qt 4.6, the latest version of the cross-platform application and UI framework. Featuring new platform support, powerful new graphical capabilities and support for multi-touch and gestures, Qt 4.6 makes developing advanced applications and devices easier and more enjoyable.

"Qt 4.6 marks an exciting time for developers, regardless of their target form factor or platform," said Sebastian Nyström, Vice President, Application Services and Frameworks at Nokia.

"Developers can easily create visually appealing and web-connected applications for desktops or devices, including targeting the hundreds of millions of Symbian and Maemo-based devices,"

"The community will enjoy using Qt's intuitive programming interface to quickly create powerful, appealing applications." Nyström added.

More platforms
Qt 4.6 includes support for the Symbian platform for the first time, and also adds Windows 7, Apple Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and the upcoming Maemo 6 to the list of Qt supported platforms. Also available is community support for real-time operating systems QNX and VxWorks. Support for Maemo 5 is also currently in development, with the second technology preview being released today.

Qt support for Symbian and Maemo creates the first opportunity for developers to target both of these platforms from the same codebase. Being able to share code across platforms means that the applications they create will reach the market faster and reach a broader audience of device users.

Also released today is a technology preview of new Qt APIs from the Qt Mobility project. These cross-platform APIs provide developers with functionality such as location for navigation-type devices, as well as messaging, contacts, and bearer management.

More eye candy
Qt 4.6 builds upon the graphical improvements of 4.5 and enhances them with the addition of new Animation Framework - including intuitive state machine functionality - plus new advanced graphics effects like opacity, drop shadows, glow, and filtering.

More fingers
One of the most exciting new features in Qt 4.6 is the ability to create multi-touch applications. New multi-touch and gesture based input methods such as flicking and kinetic scrolling make Qt 4.6 a powerful framework for creating dynamic, tactile ways for users to interact with applications and devices.

More horsepower
Qt 4.6 challenges the conventional development notion that advanced UI capabilities normally come with a significant performance cost. Extensive work has been done to deliver the best possible performance while enabling developers to deliver the "wow" effect that is demanded by users.

Key performance improvements come in the form of a highly optimized, re-written Qt GraphicsView rendering algorithm, a new OpenGL paint engine, WebKit, 2D vector graphic support using OpenVG, and new DirectFB support.

Updated tools
Complimenting the release of Qt 4.6 is an updated release of Qt Creator, a cross-platform IDE for Qt development. Qt Creator 1.3 and Qt 4.6 form the Qt SDK which contains everything developers need to create cross-platform applications.
